Blog redesign is done. Now…

I just need to work on my dot-com.

I could have gotten a lot more creative with this blog design.  I could have created my own background pattern, I could have developed my own layout, I could have… well, you get the idea.  Mostly, I wanted bigger type, dynamic type, and a bit less clutter after I saw this beautiful blog.  I’ll probably continue tweaking for a while.

Here’s another really sweet blog design.

Thoughts?

Also, this is my 100th post.  The blog is almost two years old, but I’ve only made 100 posts? I need to work on that!

Fixed Gear: Impressions

The TomiCOG / Velocity Blunt setup is totally rad, and now I’m only worried about my chain snapping.  I’m working it over pretty bad with skips and skids though, so I’ll probably have to replace it in a couple of months.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it has already stretched a little bit.  I need to find a better chain breaker though, I keep breaking the cheap ones I find.  Really though, it’s a dream setup.  I may get another cog soon to try out different ratios.

As it turns out, skip-stops use muscles in my lower back that I don’t frequently otherwise use.  So I’ve been alternating days or riding half days on the fixie.  It is kind of hard to stand up gracefully right now, with the soreness and all.  But I’ll get to a point where it’s not a problem.  And I’ll probably have huge, bulging lower-back muscles.

Also, I bought some SKS fenders.  They’re a dream!  It has been pretty rainy lately, and man, they make such a nice difference.  My homemade fender really makes no comparison with these guys.  The best thing about them is that my pants don’t get wet… almost at all!  My ankles and socks and shoes are dry, even in wet conditions or rain!  My tires are a really tight fit – I’m running 700 x 28 Armadillos, and once in a while, they’ll rub on a bump or a curb drop or something.  Also, I had to grind off the end of a bracket that was holding my front brake caliper to the frame so the front fender wouldn’t rub on the tire.  Now all I need are front and rear racks, and I’ll have my touring fixed gear bike totally set up.

FIXED GEAR!!! AAAAHHHHH!!

I finally got my Velocity Blunt 29er wheel (Deore XT hub) to set up my fixie.  And I already had my Tomi Cog.  I set it up on my Raleigh Team USA last night and rode around for at least an hour.  It was total bliss!  The last fixed gear setup I had lasted about three days (Vuelta XRP flip-flop stock hubs suck but the rims and spokes are great), and my previous setup had been a few months before that.

Thank you, TomiCOG!

And if you’re in the UK, be sure to check this out: http://londonfixiebike.co.uk/.

Side story: As I was pulling multiple-gear-related parts off the Raleigh, I discovered why I may have felt so much drag in the drivetrain lately.  The rear axle was totally loose and the bearings were just grinding down inside the wheel.  I tried to pull the skewer out, but discovered that it was bent.  That’s kind of a problem, because the quick-release hitch for my trailer is stuck on the other side, between the quick-release lever and the axle nuts!  I suppose this wouldn’t happen with a regularly-checked, well-maintained bike.  But I just kind of expect more durability from my bike parts.  Or I just beat the crap out of them.  That’s why I got a TomiCOG!
